a project of Soroptimist International of Truckee Meadows, Sierra Nevada Region, SIA
In Spring 2003, Soroptimist International of Truckee Meadows began an Animal Assistance Program for the poorest villagers in Thulipokhari. In conjunction with the village council, SITM provides money to make loans to villagers to purchase bee hives, chickens, goats and water buffaloes. The animals return honey, eggs, milk, labors of the beasts, as well as producing offspring to continue to sustain these families.
Loan repayments are used to provide additional loans for animals. Simple interest collected with the repayments is used to continue Soroptimist’s vision of education for girls in Nepal.
Highlights
- 4 families are poultry farming, producing 1,000 checks and ducks
- 18 families purchased 100 goats, birthing 200 offspring
- 4 families have engaged in beekeeping
